This is Scenes From Home

And I’m Huma Qureshi. Welcome, I’m very happy you’re here.

I’m the award-winning author of four books and counting but this space is something different. I used to have a nerdy literary short story Substack here, but I have set Scenes From Home up because I’d like a place where I can write and be creative and share some of the stuff that I love without necessarily having to wear my author hat all the time. I’m into lots of things, interiors, design, films, decorating, TV, baking, my cat, Scandinavian holidays… and I’d like a way to collect all of that and share the things I love and that inspire me in a hopefully meaningful way. The things that make my everyday, the little things that feel like home, whether that’s a book I’m reading, or a wallpaper I’m obsessed with or a new recipe I’ve tried.

Many (!) years ago I used to be a journalist for The Guardian and Observer but then I went freelance and wrote for lots of papers and magazines, moving away from news to write features that fit into the culture or life and style sections - pieces on interiors, homes, food, books, tv and so on. I suppose that ‘life and style’ side of me never disappeared, and maybe this is my way of recreating that, who knows!

I’m also studying for a qualification in interior design at KLC School of Design and hope to balance interior design with my writing in the future.

I don’t have it all figured out but I quite like how low-key and no pressure that feels. It’s my hope that Scenes From Home will be a much-needed lovely little escape for me and I hope it will be the same for you, too.
